Folk Tales
Deborah Barton
17 June – 31 July
Wellington based artist Deborah Barton works in the mediums of printmaking, drawing and painting. She created this series of figurative paintings while staying at Burwell House as the William Hodges fellow in 2010.
Barton has a subdued narrative in her work: exploring imagination, familial ties, and Southland’s environment and history. Combining photographic-like figures in distinctly Southern settings, the paintings have a tangible nostalgia and personal background. In Barton’s imagined version of Southland, she poses the questions- who are these people? What happened to these places?
