The Natural History Gallery

Ongoing

The Natural History Gallery is one of the most popular permanent exhibitions in the museum. Here you can trace Southland's fascinating natural heritage over the course of millions of years.

The fossils are always popular with the children. Here you can see the sharp teeth of a Jurassic Ichthyosaur (Greek meaning 'fish lizard') and look at our oldest fossils on show - the Ordovician era graptolites, from around 460 million years ago.
