Come and explore the fascinating world of Victoriana! This display illustrates what a fairly wealthy Southland household might have looked like on an autumnal evening in the year of Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, 1887. The Victorian era (1837-1901) was time when European New Zealanders still looked to Great Britain for the latest trends and fashions.
Wealthy homes of the time were often crowded with imported, heavy, and intricately designed furniture; as well as an assortment of trinkets and curios used to display the owners status and 'cultured tastes'. This exhibition features a wealth of household objects kindly donated by Southlanders over the years.
