All aboard the Roaring 40’s Gallery! This exhibition takes you on a multimedia adventure many hundreds of kilometres south of Stewart Island to the remote and starkly beautiful Sub-Antarctic islands. Here you can learn of the fascinating history of the islands, discover the incredible varieties of wildlife that reside there, and explore the unique environmental processes that have created these truly special places.

Starting off in the Sub-Antarctic natural history area you can see a giant spider crab, learn about the natural environment, and hear the distinctive siren-like call of the white headed petrel and other indigenous birds. Further along you can learn of the albatross migration paths and vast penguin colonies that belong to the Sub-Antarctic region.
