Following the success of the film staring Anthony Hopkins, this gallery has been established to document the life of local icon Burt Munro. In 1915, Burt brought his first motorcycle. Five years and several motorbikes later he used all his savings to buy a brand new 1920 600cc Indian Scout (engine no. 5OR627) for 140 pound. At this stage the motorcycle had a top speed of around 55mph.

In the 1920's he began to extensively modify the Indian in his small workshop/home on Bainfield Road in Invercargill, using unorthodox and sometimes crude home-made components combined with single-minded determination in his quest for speed. Find out all about Burt's journey and learn more about the man himself and 'The World's Fastest Indian'.
